Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner

Choosing the right firewood can minimize creosote buildup in your chimney.

Seasoned Firewood

One of the best ways to keep your flue cleaner is by burning seasoned firewood. This wood has been dried for at least six months, reducing moisture content and producing less smoke and creosote.

Look for cracks in the end grain and lighter weight as indicators of well-seasoned wood. Avoid burning freshly cut or 'green' wood, as it contains high moisture levels that contribute to creosote buildup.

Types of Wood to Use

Hardwoods like oak, maple, and ash are excellent choices for cleaner burning fires. These woods burn hotter and longer, resulting in less creosote production compared to softwoods.

Avoid softwoods such as pine and spruce when possible, as they burn quickly and produce more resin and creosote, which can coat the inside of your chimney.

Storage Tips for Firewood

Proper storage of firewood is crucial for maintaining its quality. Store it off the ground to prevent moisture absorption and cover it loosely to allow airflow while protecting it from rain.

Stack firewood in a way that promotes drying, with cut ends facing the prevailing wind direction. This setup helps the wood dry faster, ensuring you have seasoned logs ready for use.
